# Event Types & Categories
## Optional attributes that help show your events in the right place
### What are Event Types & Categories?
Simply put, these fields allow you to attach specific categories or types to your announced events. Venue Pilot includes a pre-selected list of standard categories designed to cover the vast majority of venue programming—from live music and stand-up comedy to private rentals and community events.
### Why Use Them?
- **Better Partner Syndication:** While these tags won't display on your public event pages, they are included in the event data Venue Pilot sends to our distribution partners (such as Bandsintown, JamBase, and others). Selecting an accurate type and category ensures your events are sent with precise metadata, helping partners categorize and surface your shows correctly to prospective fans.
### How to Assign Types & Categories
You can tag your event directly when announcing it:
1. Create or open an event in Venue Pilot and open the **Announce Modal**.
2. Scroll to the bottom of the modal.
3. Select your desired **Event Type**, **Category**, or **Subcategory**.
4. Click **Save**.
I'd like custom categories
For the time being we are keeping it limited in order to prevent fragmentation with our partner data. In the meantime, tags are a great way to create customer segments based on custom things like genre!
